Converting processes and the specifically the webs being processed are generally handled most efficiently within a specific tension range.

This tension is delivered to your web through a torque (power) device. This device may deliver tension to one of three tension zones in your machine. A brake or drive will deliver tension to your web in the unwind zone by "holding back" the unwinding parent roll. Generally, a driven nip or s-wrap type feed roll assembly delivers tension to a web in internal tension zones. Drives and clutches deliver tension to webs in the rewind zone.

What do brakes, clutches and drives all have in common? They are all torque devices. That is, they all operate by delivering torque (power) to any process. In the converting industry, torque (power) is used in the form of web tension.

Often times, people question how much torque do tension zones require to process webs at a given tension range. Fortunately required torque for a given application is an easy equation. Maximum roll diameter multiplied by total web tension divided by two will tell you the torque required for a given application.
