Do grooved rolls work?

At the risk of sounding more like a politician than a machinery manufacturer, the answer is really...yes and no. Or more accurately, the answer should be - not the way you think. Most people believe the grooves push wrinkles out of webs from the center out to each edge. This is mostly due to the optical illusion created by the grooves as the roll rotates. In reality, since most grooved rolls are utilized as idler rolls, they rotate synchronous with the web speed, which means any wrinkles entering the roll remain in a constant position with the grooves, so the grooves DO NOT push wrinkles out of the web.

Grooved rolls are useful in high speed applications to remove air entrainment and keep the web in traction throughout the machine.

If you want aggressive wrinkle removal from your grooved roll, try using it as a dead bar. The grooves work extremely well to push wrinkles out of webs when the roll face does not rotate at the same speed as the web. If your web can take being dragged across the surface of a dead bar without harm - try it. It works.
