TECH TIP FOR THE WEEK OF May, 5 2008

New demands from customers?

Packaging converters see an increasing trend in their customers’ demands to run thinner materials. It’s easy to say….. not as easy to do. The reasons for going thinner are twofold 1) think green, thinner materials are less bulk to fill landfills, 2) thinner materials cost less and use less raw materials. Over time, less raw materials will add up to big savings.

Thinner materials mean less stable materials. They will have a tendency to wrinkle where thicker materials won’t.

So here is the request from your customers (or perhaps your boss) – “We want you to run 20% thinner materials, oh and by the way, you can’t slow the machine down, in fact speed it up if you can.” Well, you try to run that thinner stuff and you are throwing half of it away because of wrinkles, wrinkles and more wrinkles.

Look to anti-wrinkle rolls to solve the problem. Properly applied, anti-wrinkle rolls can help you run those new thin gauge materials. So you can keep your processes running at full speed.
