What is taper tension and do I need it?

Taper tension is the term used for gradually lessening web tension levels as you rewind a roll. Many people confuse taper tension with the gradual lowering of torque, necessary as you unwind to maintain constant tension. THIS IS NOT TAPER TENSION.

Remember it like this:

Unwind and process zones NEVER have taper tension. You always want constant tension as you unwind (achieved by lowering torque as the unwind roll decreases in size) to enter your process. You always want constant tension within your process zones.

As a general rule of thumb all rewinds should have taper tension. Even if you want a constant tension as you rewind, your rewind equipment should have taper tension capability for the future.

Basically your rewound roll is like a big clock spring and as you wind a roll, internal forces build on a large scale if you wind with constant tension.

So, the question remains. Do you need taper tension for YOUR rewind application? And the answer is maybe. If you get crushed cores on your winder - you need taper tension. If you get inner layers buckling within your rewound rolls - you need taper tension. If you get starring in your rolls - you need taper. However, if your rewound rolls are perfect now, don't mess with perfection.
