Why is tension control important to me?

Bottom line - the answer is simply defects. Many wrinkling, registration, web marks, creases, laminating "curl", coating defects and winding problems can be attributed to improper tension settings and control. When considering web tension and how to control it, it is important to understand there are three types of tension zones in your machine. Unwind, intermediate and rewind. Depending on your process, there may be multiples of each zone. However, each tension zone in your machine can be classified in one of these three zones. Each zone must be controlled individually. Effective control of the unwind zones and rewind zones is more difficult than the intermediate zones because roll diameters constantly change as unwinds decrease in size and rewinds increase. We will discuss how to control unwind, rewind and intermediate zones in future articles. For now, if tension issues seem to be causing added defects in your operation, explore and classify each tension zone in your machine as unwind, rewind or intermediate. Then watch for future articles discussing how to control tension in your process and how to overcome defect issues caused by improper tension settings and control.
