Be careful when re-sizing duct work in a pneumatic conveying system

Generally pneumatic conveying systems are designed by the manufacturer to operate optimally to convey "worst case" materials most efficiently. A big part of the complete system is the duct work. Often times, users of the pneumatic conveying system will change duct sizes for many different reasons; maybe to use up some existing duct in stock or maybe to fit a smaller duct in a tight area. Whatever the reason, if you are changing duct sizes, be careful! Smaller duct will cause pressure drops and will hurt a system going long distances. Larger ducts will decrease air speed which may cause a system to fail completely. Always consult the manufacturer of the pneumatic conveying system prior to making any changes in system design or lay-out.
