Don't mix anti-wrinkle devices in one tension zone in your machine.

We have discussed in past articles that most converting machines can be divided into three operational areas; unwind zone / process zone / rewind zone. Keeping in mind your machine may have several process zones, each separated by driven nip or s-wrap stations.

Often times, when I'm in the field, I see several different types of ant-wrinkle rollers being utilized in one operational zone. This may be because through the years different types of anti-wrinkle rollers were purchased and tried and to make sure each is taken advantage of; they are all put to use.

If you are mixing anti-wrinkle rolls in your machine and it works for you - don't change. I'm a firm believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". However if you are having wrinkling, tracking and / or web distortion issues, the culprit may be your anti-wrinkle rolls or more accurately - your anti-wrinkle rolls "working against" each other.

Different types of anti-wrinkle rolls each operate using their own principals of wrinkle removal. Mixing anti-wrinkle rolls will many times cause them to fight each other and cause undo strain on your delicate web. Do not mix anti-wrinkle devices. Try to standardize on one style of anti-wrinkle roll on one machine or at least one style of anti-wrinkle roller per operational zone. Several of the same type of anti-wrinkle roll may be required per zone.
