Skew adjustment can be helpful with tight or loose sides on webs

Some amount of skew adjustment can help a great deal with tight side / loose side webs.

I believe your machines' unwind zone / process zone / rewind zone rollers should all be aligned level and parallel to each other. In fact, I am a proponent of having your rollers laser aligned if necessary to improve web tracking and wrinkling problems.

However, many times rolls of material and webs delivered to a process may have tight side / loose side condition. We have all seen it - one side of the web is "tighter" in the machine direction than the other side.

Often times, skew adjustment at the unwind station and / or incorporated into strategically placed idler rolls can help alleviate web handling problems associated with tight side / loose side webs. Skew adjust will not permanently change your web, so it's not the cure-all for this condition. However, it can help on a temporary basis. Maybe just enough to allow you to run that troublesome material at the pace you require.
