Roller Alignment is critical

Roller alignment is one key element in any converting process. Why is roller alignment so critical? One web handling principal states that a web will seek a 90 degree angle to a roller, in its' entry span to that roller. Entry span is defined as unsupported web distance to the idler or driven roller. Keep in mind the web must be in traction with the roller in question for the web handling principal to apply. So, if rollers are not parallel with each other in a converting process, a web will actually bend out of its' normal running plane in order to maintain a 90 degree angle to the non-parallel roller.

Why does this matter? When a web moves to maintain the perpendicular entry rule, undue stress can cause wrinkles. A web may move out of proper position for your process - this is why web guides are required for most converting applications. Product quality may suffer due to defects caused by web stress.

Roller alignment may be required for your process if you see problems relating improper web alignment (wrinkling, edge alignment, defects). This roller alignment may be attempted with tape measures and levels. However, laser alignment may be required to accurately align your rollers in your process.
