Don't Oversize Brakes / Clutches / Drives

If you ever need to purchase one of these tension providing pieces of equipment, it's important to understand that they are sized to accommodate your roll diameter, tension range, web width and speed. If you dictate very large specifications these items can be over specified. Not only will you wind up spending more money, initially, for torque and horsepower you may never use, they wind up being so large that they will never handle your low-end requirements properly. In other words, if you are always running in the lower 10% of your brake / clutch or drive you may not be able to achieve the resolution you require to accurately control your tension thru your full range of specifications.

The moral of the story: only use real operating specifications to properly size any tension control device.
