Tips to Select the Right Unwind Brake by Double E Group

If you process rolls of paper, film, foil, textile or nonwoven webs, proper tension control in the unwind zone starts with your braking system. How does your unwind brake operate? Is the brake too big or too small for your application? Is the brake designed, specifically for converting applications?

Here are some tips for selecting the right brake for your application:
  • Proper brake sizing: Every unwind brake has a minimum to maximum torque output range. It is extremely important to understand your minimum to maximum torque requirement for your tension range, width range and roll diameter to core range. In order to calculate (link below) this required operating range you will need to provide your web width (minimum to maximum), maximum roll diameter, core size and web tension range (minimum to maximum) in pounds per linear inch (PLI).

  • Proper cooling: Every unwind brake is designed to dissipate heat. Does your existing brake overheat? Is there a lot of maintenance, like brake pad replacement required? You must understand what your unwind application requires from a brake in terms of heat dissipation, in order to specify the proper brake (link below) for your application.

  • Please understand that brakes of all sorts are used in all kinds of industries (like on your car). Most brakes are not designed for the unique aspects of converting and tension control applications. Making use of a braking system that is not designed, specifically for unwinding into a converting application is a recipe for disaster. Utilize a brake supplier with specific knowledge and expertise in web handling to ensure your unwind tension control performance.
