It is important for your web to stay in traction with idler and driven rollers.

We have discussed the importance of your web staying in traction with idler rollers and driven rollers. Often times, rollers are rubber covered to increase the coefficient of friction between the roller face and the web. This helps to keep the web in traction with the roller, improving web behavior.

Sometimes, even rubber covered rolls have a difficult time of staying in traction with your web. In many cases rubber covered rolls turn perfectly well when they are new or have been recently reground. Then over a period of time, these rolls simply stop turning. Most of the time this is due to a "sheen" the web is leaving on the rubber surface itself. If you see a color or tint difference between where the web runs over the roller to the edges where the web may not touch, this is most likely the problem.

Roll cleaning can help with rubber rollers that don't turn. One very effective cleaner that I have found is Greased Lightning. This cleaner seems relatively inert and I have never seen it harm a rubber compound. However, you should check the Material Safety Data Sheet to ensure that this cleaner is allowed in your facility. Also, check with your facility safety manager to ensure Greased Lightning’s use is safe for your plant. Check with the rubber roller supplier to make sure whatever cleaner you use will not harm your rubber rollers. You may also have other rubber cleaners you prefer. Bottom line, keep your rubber covered rolls surface clean to ensure they continue grip your web.
