Grooved Rollers Not All They Are Cracked Up to Be!

Many converting applications running paper, film, foil, textile or nonwoven webs use grooved rollers placed strategically or randomly throughout the converting machine.

Grooved rollers come in many shapes and sizes, some aluminum, steel, stainless steel or rubber. Oftentimes grooved rollers are homemade devices.

When utilized as idler rollers (driven by the web, synchronous with the web) grooved rollers don't actually remove wrinkles. Instead, the wrinkle remains in a constant position with the groove, through the roller's rotation, making the groove ineffective. Belief that grooved rollers do anything more than support the web (just like any other idler roller) is mostly an optical illusion, like the effect created by stripes on a barber shop pole.

If you have web wrinkles and utilize grooved rollers in your operation, you may want to consider more aggressive, field proven, anti-wrinkle devices to help mitigate your web wrinkle issues.
