To chop or not to chop ... that is the question!

Trim choppers offer a lot of features to a trim removal system that make them very attractive. However, not every trim removal application requires them. So, you may ask yourself if you need a chopper for your trim removal system. Here are some advantages to using choppers in trim removal systems:

  • If your trim removal system utilizes a material handling fan to generate suction and the trim passes through the blades of the fan to the pressure side, you may have to chop the trim to allow the pieces to pass through the fan blades. Some material handling fans have enough power to allow continuous trim through the blades. However, if the fan itself is chopping or ripping the trim simply by relying on the power of the fan and the fan blades themselves to break up the trim, excessive wear and resultant maintenance and replacement issues to your trim removal system will result. Installing a chopper prior to a material handling fan may have a dramatic effect in increasing the overall efficiency of the system.
  • It is much easier to convey chopped trim (pieces) compared to continuous trim (one long length, essentially). Adding a chopper to your trim removal system will allow you extremely long pneumatic conveying distances.
  • The trim collection point density will increase greatly by chopping your trim. In other words, chopped trim takes up less space than continuous trim. This may benefit you by decreasing frequency of collection point "clean-outs".
  • Trim choppers can be designed to handle trim with exposed adhesive if required.

Some trim removal systems (like CAC's Fox TrimAway) allow you to add choppers after installation. This "building block" concept allows you to add a chopper if you decide chopped trim is advantageous for your particular application.
