Electrically heated rolls are an excellent choice to heat your web.

Properly designed electrically heated rolls are clean, accurate, simple and low maintenance. Comparatively speaking, other methods of heating rolls can be messy and high maintenance.

Keep in mind, there is a right way and a wrong way to design electrically heated rolls (as with most things in life, I guess).

The wrong way is to utilize a single heater cartridge mounted in the center of the roller. With this design the heater cartridge does not rotate, while the roller face rotates around the heater cartridge. Why is this wrong way to design and build a heated roll? This design will certainly heat the roller and will in turn heat your web. However, it will be impossible to control the temperature of the roller and web with any level of accuracy. The initial cost for this system makes it very attractive. However, keep in mind, it will cost you much more in defective materials and replacement costs to get something that works.

The proper design for heated rolls is multi-heater cartridge design. Typically, this design utilizes heavy wall tubing for the roller face. The roller face is then gun drilled and multiple heater cartridges are mounted in the roller face. Heating radius of each cartridge is overlapped and so heat control with this type of roller is unparalleled. The design is relatively simple and is the most direct, low maintenance method of heating your web.

Bottom line, if you need to heat your web, you should consider a multi-heater cartridge type electrically heated roll.
